The FCT police command has again warned police officers against getting involved in land disputes, stressing that erring officers and their supervisors would be held accountable.
The Command which clarified that land disputes are outside its jurisdiction noted with dismay the mounting complaints of unlawful detention of individuals over bailable offences.
In a statement on Saturday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the commissioner of police, Ajao Adewale, said “police must not intervene in civil matters, particularly land-related disputes, which lie outside their jurisdiction. Any officer in violation, and supervisors who fail to enforce this directive, will be held accountable, ”
The CP warned that any officer found demanding money for bail or documentation would face disciplinary action.
He ordered all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to release all suspects held for minor offences.
“Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Departments are to immediately review and release suspects held for minor, bailable offences once due processes such as documentation and surety verification are completed.
“Bail is free, and any officer found collecting money for bail or documentation will face strict disciplinary action,” the CP directed.
CP Adewale also condemned the growing trend of demanding payment before investigating cases, describing it as extortion and abuse of office, which he vowed to punish severely.
While warning against offering police officers bribes, he also advised citizens to refrain from using the police to pursue debt recovery or personal grievances.
He said, “Members of the public are also cautioned against offering bribes, as this is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Citizens are advised not to misuse the Police for debt recovery or personal vendettas.
“All residents of the FCT are urged to support the Command’s efforts to ensure professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights. Reports of misconduct should be sent to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) at 08107314192..”
