President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Benjamin Oyediran Oyelami as the Acting Director/Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Sheda, Kwali, Abuja.
According to a statement by the Controller of Information and Public Relations at NMC, Onyekachi Njoku, the appointment follows the recent elevation of the Centre’s Director/Chief Executive, Prof. Promise Mebine, to Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State.
Njoku noted that Mebine’s tenure at the Centre was originally due to end in August this year.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, in a letter conveying the approval and signed by the Director of University Education of the Ministry, stated that the appointment of Prof. Oyelami as Acting Director of NMC takes immediate effect.
A Professor of Mathematics, Prof. Oyelami joined the services of the Centre over 20 years ago from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. He has served at various times as Coordinator of the Mathematics and Theoretical Physics Programmes of the Centre.
An academic product of the University of Jos, University of Ibadan and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, he graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Mathematics, an MSc in Mathematics, and a PhD in Mathematics.
Prof. Oyelami has published widely in both national and international journals. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Deputy Director and Coordinator of Academic Planning at the Centre.
His appointment is expected to strengthen the Centre’s mission to promote excellence in research, innovation, teaching, learning, and capacity building in Mathematics and the Mathematical Sciences for national development.
