The UK Home Office has effected a change to its immigration policy, with a reduction of the post-study work visa period for international graduates from two years to 18 months.
In a post shared on X, the UK Home Office disclosed that the policy would take effect in 2027.
According to the UK Home Office, the decision was aimed at ensuring that students contribute meaningfully to the UK economy by securing graduate-level employment within a shorter timeframe.
“Many students who come to the UK do not transition into graduate-level employment. The UK needs students to contribute meaningfully to the UK economy.
“That’s why, from 2027, eligible students will have 18 months after course completion to secure graduate-level employment,” the post read
Before this announcement was made, international students were eligible for a two-year post-study work visa upon completion of their studies in the UK.
The UK’s post-study work visa, officially known as the Graduate Route visa, enables international students who have completed an eligible UK degree to stay and work, or seek employment, for up to two years. PhD graduates are, however, eligible for a three-year post-study work visa.
Citizens of other countries migrate to the UK with the hopes of seeking employment.
