The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has declared support for the United States airstrikes targeting terrorist in North-West Nigeria.
In a press statement on Wednesday by the National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, Afenifere described the moves as a welcomed development.
The group said the decisive military action followed years of persistent attacks, abductions, and destruction of property that have left many communities at the mercy of terrorists.
According to Afenifere, the involvement of the United States in the counter-terrorism effort should be seen as a strategic partnership rather than a loss of sovereignty.
The organisation argued that Nigeria’s sovereignty is best defined by its ability to protect its citizens, secure its borders, and enforce the rule of law, noting that the protection of lives must outweigh political sentiments or populist criticism.
Afenifere called on citizens, political leaders, and civil society organisations to support the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts and avoid actions or rhetoric capable of undermining national security operations. It stressed the need for unity and constructive collaboration in the collective fight against terrorism.
“We call upon all citizens, political leaders, and civil society actors to resist any temptation to undermine these efforts with misplaced criticism. Now is the time for solidarity, support, and constructive collaboration to eradicate terrorism and protect the lives of Nigerians.
“The courage, professionalism, and decisive action displayed by both Nigerian and United States forces should be applauded.
“Afenifere reaffirms its support for any measures, domestic or joint, that will ensure that Nigeria’s citizens can live in safety and security, free from the scourge of terror.”
