The Nigerian Senate has rejected the electronic transmission of election results in the proposed amendment to the electoral Act, rather, the lawmakers opted to retain the current provision, which mandates the presiding officer to transfer results, including the total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot, in a manner prescribed by the Commission.
Most Nigerians has sought to amend Clause 60, Subsection 3, of the Electoral Act which would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission to upload results from each polling unit to the IREV portal in real time, immediately after completing Form EC&A, which must be signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by party agents.
The amendment if effected would have deepened Nigeria’s democratic process, guaranteed free and fair elections and promote transparency in the electoral process.
