The Dangote Industries Limited has distanced self from the tragic Enugu road accident that claimed many lives on Wednesday, arguing that the truck involved in a fatal accident does not belong to it.
The denial comes after nationwide backlash and condemnation trailed the incident, with many calling for strict regulations and sanctions against reckless driving across Nigeria roads.
But in a statement, Dangote Group said the truck was operated by a third party, saying it was not part of its fleet. “We are engaging with the appropriate agencies to find out why the truck was carrying our logo when it is not part of our fleet,” the company said.
It added that it would introduce stricter checks on the unauthorised use of its brand identity. “Going forward, we will apply more scrutiny to the misuse of our logo on vehicles not linked to the Group,” it said.
The company explained that it typically avoids commenting on individual cases but was compelled to respond due to “misinformation” spreading on social media. It also pledged cooperation with authorities investigating the crash.
The company insisted it remained committed to “the highest standards of corporate responsibility, safety, and integrity.”
The incident adds to long-running criticism over Dangote-branded trucks, which have been linked to numerous road accidents across Nigeria. Last month, Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor, died following a leg amputation after being struck by a truck bearing Dangote’s logo in Edo State. Her family is seeking justice and compensation.
