The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission ,OSIEC, has announced it would conduct LG polls in the state on November 16.
Daily Intel Newspaper recalls that on July 11, the supreme court ruled that the federal government should henceforth pay LG allocations directly to local councils.
The judgment also mandated states to ensure that their local councils are democratically elected, and that the federal government should no longer pay allocations to local councils superintended by caretaker chairpersons.
In a statement on Tuesday, Babatunde Osibodu, chairman of OSIEC said political parties would begin their campaigns on August 9.
Osibodu added that the party primaries will hold between August 26 to September 9.
“Thursday, August 8, 2024, is scheduled for the release of guidelines for the conduct of the elections and stakeholders meeting while campaigns by the political parties begin on Friday, August 9,” the statement reads.
“The political parties are also scheduled to hold their party primaries between Monday, August 26 to Monday, September 9, 2024.”
Outgoing elected LG officials in the state completed their tenure about a week ago.
