The Senate on Thursday constituted a seven-member ad hoc committee to collate the inputs of senators on the proposed amendment of the Electoral Act, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Announcing the development, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the committee was set up to harness the views of lawmakers, with a view to address outstanding concerns on the proposed amendments.
“This is a very important bill, especially as it is election time. We must take our time to ensure justice is done to all, so that we do not end up at the tribunal.”
He added that the panel had been “mandated to contribute, galvanise and distil the opinion of senators on the bill.
“In no particular order, the committee will be led by Niyi Adegbonmire, chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters,” Akpabio said.
Other members of the committee are Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye and Titus Zam.
Akpabio said the committee has a maximum of three days to conclude its assignment and submit its report to the Senate by Tuesday.
“The Senate has set up a small committee to further make contributions, galvanise, distil all the opinions of distinguished senators and present them to us for final deliberation on Tuesday.
“Sen. Niyi Adegbonmire will serve as chairman, while the members are Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye and Titus Zam.
“The committee has 48 hours, or at most three days, within which to conclude its assignments and refer to the Senate before our next plenary, which comes up on Tuesday.
“The Clerk of the Senate will be the secretary of this committee,” he said
