The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Anambra State Government must urgently recognize and act upon the grave implications of reported threats to the life of Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor and members of his family. The safety of human rights defenders is not a privilege; it is a constitutional obligation and a critical measure of the nation’s commitment to justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
Human rights lawyers, exemplified by figures such as Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, play an indispensable role in safeguarding justice, dignity, and constitutional order. They serve as the voice of victims, hold institutions accountable, and challenge oppressive actions that undermine fundamental freedoms. By defending the marginalized and the vulnerable, they ensure that the rights to life, liberty, equality, and human dignity are not merely theoretical guarantees but actively protected principles.
Beyond individual representation, human rights lawyers function as catalysts for systemic reform. They confront entrenched abuses, expose excesses of power, and drive social change that strengthens democratic institutions. Their work promotes accountability, empowers communities, and reinforces the foundations of a just and inclusive society. Any threat against such individuals is therefore not only an attack on a person, but an assault on the justice system itself.
Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, widely known as counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has reportedly faced repeated threats, harassment, and intimidation linked to his professional duties and human rights advocacy. In recent times, lawyers across Nigeria have raised alarm over growing threats to their lives, often connected to high-profile cases and politically sensitive engagements. These dangers have become widespread, with no part of the country considered completely safe.
Of particular concern is Ejiofor’s recent public alarm over what he described as an imminent and grave threat to his life and the safety of his family. According to him, the alleged threats involve an Anambra State lawmaker and other individuals. He specifically named Mr. Vincent Dike, Mr. Ugochukwu Nnajiofor (also known as Man Pass Man), and Mr. Ikenna Ofodeme, whom he identified as the Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly.
“It has become imperative that I, a bona fide citizen of Oraifite, formally draw public attention to a clear, imminent, and grave threat to my life and the safety of my family,” Ejiofor stated. He described it as a “solemn duty” to place the matter on record “with clarity, firmness, and resolve.”
Ejiofor further declared that he was fully aware of what he termed “the intentions, designs, and machinations presently in motion,” warning that all those involved, whether acting directly or through proxies, would be held accountable. “Let it be known, without equivocation, that I am fully apprised of the intentions, designs, and machinations presently in motion,” he said, adding that “accountability shall neither be avoided nor deferred, whether by action or by calculated inaction.”
Condemning what he described as attempts to exploit the festive season for intimidation, Ejiofor stated that it was “utterly reprehensible for any individual, regardless of influence or perceived protection, to exploit this sacred period as a veil for intimidation, lawlessness, or malfeasance.”
He further warned that any harm against any member of his family would not be regarded as accidental, but as a deliberate act with grave legal and moral consequences. Such actions, he stressed, would be “closely observed by law enforcement agencies, civil society, and the wider international community.”
Importantly, Ejiofor disclosed that relevant security and statutory authorities have already been formally notified and that official alerts have been lodged. “I now await their intervention, confident in the supremacy of due process, the sanctity of human life, and the enduring authority of the rule of law,” he added.
Under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the right to life is unequivocally guaranteed. A threat to life constitutes a criminal offense, punishable under Nigerian law by imprisonment, and imposes a clear legal duty on security agencies to protect threatened individuals using reasonable and lawful means.
Barrister Ejiofor has reaffirmed his commitment to peace, lawful conduct, and the safety of his community, stating that he remains “steadfast, resolute, and unwavering” despite the alleged threats. His stance underscores the courage of human rights defenders who continue to uphold justice even in the face of personal danger.
This situation presents a critical moment for the Federal Government and the Anambra State Government. Failure to act decisively would not only endanger lives but also erode public confidence in the state’s capacity to protect its citizens, particularly those who stand on the frontlines of justice and human rights advocacy.
Protecting Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor and his family is not optional. It is a constitutional duty, a moral imperative, and a test of Nigeria’s adherence to the rule of law. The eyes of civil society, the legal community, and the international human rights community are firmly fixed on how this matter is handled.
