The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called for the regionalisation of the National Youth Service Corps ,NYSC, scheme in view of the heightened insecurity in some part of the country.
The group further called for the enforcement of the Terrorism Prohibition Act signed into law by the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement by its spokesman Jare Ajayi, the group insisted on corps members being allowed to serve in their geopolitical zones.
The group hailed the release of prospective corps members who were kidnapped on their way from Akwa Ibom to Sokoto State.
It expressed concerns over a spate of kidnappings across the country, while calling on the Federal government to take the bull by the horns.
The group decried the abduction of some UNIJOS and UNIMAID medical students in Benue State on their way to Enugu for this year’s annual Catholic Medical Students Conference.
It also condemned the killing of the Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa District in Sokoto State Alhaji Isah Bawa by his abductors and the continued detention of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola who is spending about eight months in the den of kidnappers and the killing of two police in Imo State by gunmen.
Afenifere said: “To put an end to this scourge that is eating into the fabrics of the nation there’s the urgent need by the government to start the immediate implementation of the Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022 (“TPA 2022”) signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2022.”
The group added: “Fear of kidnappers and attacks by bandits including cattle rustlers, are now rampant as exemplified by the lamentation of Iwoye-Ketu leaders mentioned inter alia. Their agony was further expressed in the following words, among others:”
