Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has stated that efforts are underway to secure the release of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
He also revealed that the Southeast governors are actively involved in the engagements with the federal government to secure the release of the IPOB leader, stressing that the outcome are positive.
Governor otti stated these during a media parley on Thursday night in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.
He said “Some of the engagements and assurances we have received are not for public consumption since it may derail the process. But you can take it for granted that, as his Governor, I’m at the forefront of ensuring he comes back home. All the South East governors are together in this,” Otti said.
His clarification is coming a day after Igbo elders from across the Southeast staged a protest at Government House, Umuahia, over Kanu’s continued incarceration.
The elders accused political leaders in the zone of neglecting the IPOB leader and urged Otti to rally his colleagues to engage President Bola Tinubu on the matter.
The Igbo elder’s protest came amid reports of the deteriorating health of Kanu in the DSS custody.
Otti expressed optimism that ongoing engagements would yield positive results.
The Biafra agitator and UK national has been in detention since he was arrested by Nigerian authorities in Kenya in an act of extraordinary rendition.
