It is a poignant truth that the measure of a life lies not in its longevity, but in its depth. While Gwamkat Gwamzhi was taken from us far too early, she lived with a fullness of purpose that many fail to achieve in a lifetime. It was with a profound sense of shock and a heavy heart that I received earlier in the week the news of her passing—a loss that feels both premature and deeply personal.
Gwamkat was a vibrant and dedicated journalist whose presence was as impactful as her work. My association with her began during her active service with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Plateau State Council. As a council official, she immediately distinguished herself, not merely through her title, but through an unwavering commitment to the integrity of the Union. She was the personification of diligence; a resourceful and respectful professional who approached every responsibility with a rare blend of seriousness and humility.
What made Gwamkat truly exceptional was her ability to balance passion with poise. She was deeply committed to the ideals of unionism and the pursuit of excellence in journalism, yet she remained remarkably grounded. Her willingness to learn and her genuine respect for senior colleagues earned her a unique kind of admiration that transcended the newsroom. She moved through the profession with maturity and discipline, relating warmly to everyone she encountered and discharging her duties with a grace that was uniquely hers.
As we struggle to come to terms with this irreparable loss, we must take solace in the enduring legacy she leaves behind. Gwamkat will be remembered not only for her professional contributions but for her character—her loyalty, her calm disposition, and her steadfast commitment to service.
Though her light has been extinguished, the impressions she left on our hearts remain indelible. I pray that the Almighty grants her eternal rest and provides her family, friends, and colleagues with the fortitude to bear this immense sorrow. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
