President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the cashless toll payment introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at major airports across the country.
The airport authority had in March 1, 2026, barred cash payments at toll gates, while introducing a system which required motorists to use prepaid access cards or electronic payment channels.
However, arising from the new payment system, the situation became rowdy, leaving passengers and motorists stranded for hours as a result of gridlock.
Addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council, FEC meeting on Wednesday, the Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the President has approved the suspension of the policy.
He said the President was worried about the sufferings Nigerians were going through and has asked the Ministry to go back to the drawing board and restrategize on the policy.
He further directed those that had bought cards continue to use them, along with cash until the Ministry and the relevant agencies comes up with a way forward.
