The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced it would temporarily close the runway of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days to enable it carry out essential repairs.
FAAN said in a statement on Thursday by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, that the closure is expected to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation by the authority.
FAAN disclosed it was carrying out the repairs because sections of the runway have deteriorated, with potholes and extensive surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
The agency said the planned repairs are necessary to restore the runway to a safer operational condition and prevent further deterioration.
The rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, treatment of cracks and resurfacing of affected sections of the runway.
FAAN said the work is being planned ahead of the expected increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas period.
The authority also disclosed that the intervention will include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region increases. It said the expansion is expected to improve the airport’s capacity and provide a smoother travel experience for passengers.
FAAN urged passengers planning to use the Owerri airport during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their airlines for information on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements.
The authority said it would continue discussions with relevant stakeholders and provide the public with the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they are finalised.
The proposed shutdown is part of FAAN’s efforts to address the condition of the airport’s runway and improve its safety and operational capacity. The timing of the repairs is also expected to help prepare the airport for increased travel demand during the end-of-year festive season.
