The Plateau State government has ordered the immediate shutdown of all junior and senior schools in the state.
The State’s Universal Basic Education Board said in a statement that the decision is a measure to protect students from any unforeseen “security threats”.
The board however pointed out that the closure is temporary but necessary, calling on all local government education authorities, administrators, and community leaders to comply.
The statement reads “The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB) has directed the immediate closure of schools across the state.
“Government Junior Model Secondary Schools (GJMSSs) will close effective Saturday, 22 November 2025. Primary and Day Schools will close effective Monday, 24 November 2025.
“This decision is underscoring the urgent need for preventive action. The Board assures parents, guardians, and stakeholders that this closure is a temporary but necessary step to forestall potential threats and to reassure communities that the government is prioritizing the wellbeing of our learners.
“The Board calls on all Local Government Education Authorities, school administrators, and community leaders to cooperate fully with this directive and remain vigilant, “ the statement warned.
Nigeria’s northern region states of Kebbi and Katsina had issued similar orders amid attacks on schools in Kebbi and Niger States where many students were kidnapped.
Taraba State did not completely shut down schools, but in a statement, it ordered the closure of hostels, citing escalating attacks and abduction of students.
