Staff of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), otherwise known as permanent staff, have protested over poor welfare, unpaid allowances and neglect by the National Assembly management.
The protesters, who carried placards with various inscription reflective of their grievances, gathered at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
The protest, organised by the leadership of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), NASC chapter, seeks an improve staff welfare and payment of outstanding allowances.
The protesters accused the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Dr Saviour Enyiekere, and other commissioners of failing to prioritise the wellbeing of staff.
The protesters also alleged that some workers are currently struggling to pay their children’s September school fees because of financial difficulties.
They accused the chairman and commissioners of frequently travelling while allegedly neglecting the welfare and interests of workers.
Some of the placards displayed by the protesters read: “Our Saviour is choking us,” “Pay our allowances,” “Senate President, please save National Assembly Service Commission from collapse,” and “Tinubu, your children are hungry in NASC.”
The protest comes almost a year after NASC staff staged a similar demonstration at the Commission’s headquarters in September 2025, barricading the main entrance over what they described at the time as worsening hunger, economic hardship and neglect by management.
During the 2025 protest, the workers accused the Commission of failing to pay welfare-related allowances and provide adequate support amid rising living costs.
They had also carried placards reading “Our Management Failed Us,” “Where is our Saviour?”, “Hunger is Killing Commission Staff,” “Medical for All,” and “Staff are dying of hardship.”
The workers had vowed to continue their protest until the then Executive Chairman addressed their grievances.
