At the same time, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), commands a fanatical, organic following among the state’s massive youth and Igbo population. Contrast this with the open secret that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot guarantee the votes of his own high-ranking party officials in any truly free and fair election in the state.
Yet, there was him. There was Mr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike just weeks ago, signaling a walkover. He was boasting with jaw-dropping arrogance, threatening to perhaps replicate the exact same dark machinations that forcefully dragged Rivers State into Tinubu’s column in the 2023 elections. This defiant, unhinged threat completely strips bare the fragile underbelly of Nigeria’s ruling party. What began as a transactional, backdoor shortcut has officially mutated into a terminal political cancer eating the APC alive.
The genesis of this crisis is rooted in ultimate betrayal and cold-blooded electoral robbery. It is a political malignancy that traces its origin back to the bitter 2022 PDP presidential primaries. Humiliated by internal defeat, Wike weaponized his toxic resentment by forming the notorious G-5 governors whose sole raison d’être was to systematically sabotage and rip his own party apart from within. But his desperate endgame was a transactional blood pact with Bola Tinubu. Fully aware that Rivers State was a fortress for Peter Obi’s roaring movement—and that a transparent election would completely annihilate Tinubu’s chances—Wike went to work, his style.
