The Rivers State Ministry of Education has ordered probe into the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil of Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, Eligbolo, and suspended the operations of the school indefinitely.
In March 17, 2026, the toddler was dropped off at the school by her parents in what was expected to be a routine day. However, by about 3 p.m., the family received a devastating call informing them that the child had died.
It was later learnt that in what many described as negligence by the school, the toddler died after a poorly mounted bookshelf collapsed while the child was sleeping. The shelf, allegedly not properly secured to the wall, fell directly on the toddler, who had been laid on a mat beneath it.
Announcing the suspension of the school in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, the ministry confirmed that it has commenced a thorough investigation into the matter, including direct engagement with the school’s management and an independent review of the incident.
Nwagor expressed deep sympathy to the grieving family, describing the loss as painful and heartbreaking.
He urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing.
“Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, Eligbolo, is hereby suspended from operations and shall not resume academic activities until all issues surrounding the matter are fully resolved,” he stated.
Reaffirming the government’s stance, Nwagor stressed that the safety and welfare of children remain a top priority, adding that the state would not tolerate any breach of established childcare regulations.
The ministry further reiterated its commitment to enforcing strict quality assurance measures across both public and private schools in Rivers State, particularly in areas concerning child safety, supervision, and institutional accountability.
