Tinubu reconstitutes Police academy governing council, approves funding for Ogun campus take-off

President Bola Tinubu has reconstituted the 16-member Governing Council of the Nigeria Police Academy, with the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, appointed as chairman.

Other members of the council include the chairman of the Police Service Commission, the Inspector-General of Police, as well as one representative each from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Finance, and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The President also appointed six members to represent the country’s geopolitical zones:
Babagana Zannah Adam – North East
Emmanuel Torkuma Manger – North Central
Maigari Abati Dikko – North West
Dubem A. Obaze – South East
Ajibogere Toyin – South West
Udom Udo Ekpoudom – South South

The Commandant of the Academy, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training will serve as ex officio members, while the Registrar of the Academy will act as secretary to the council.

Similarly, President Tinubu approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

For smooth take-off, the President approved a grant of N15 billion for the institution.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President on Monday, Bayo Onanuga, the approval is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, particularly its mandate to expand the Police Academy, currently located in Wudil, into a multi-campus institution across the country.

The statement disclosed that the intervention fund will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to support priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets.

The decision followed a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The meeting assessed student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing recruitment.
